“A conversation between @demelzagriff95 and @_diversebooks resulted in the creation of the #DiverseBookBloggers hashtag. Since May 17, the hashtag has exploded, resulting in more than 1,000 tweets from a wide variety of bloggers and Twitter users. This is just the beginning of the hashtag’s impact.” (complete storify here)
It all started when @_diversebooks was looking for another male Latino blogger (#JuanMoreBookBlogger :p) and it took 100 retweets to find some. Why was it so difficult to find more diverse bloggers? And so @demelzagriff95 came up with the hashtag #DiversebookBloggers, so that we can build a community of diverse book bloggers.
Neither the book blogosphere nor stories are as white, straight, cisgender and able-bodied as they are often represented. #DiverseBookBloggers are members of a marginalized community (LGBTQIA+, Person of Color, disabled, …) or their allies who promote #ownvoices authors and diverse reading habits. Together we want to change the publishing industry and make #ownvoices heard.
